Logins, Users & Roles: SQL Security 101
There are a lot of options for controlling user access inside a SQL Server instance and the granularity offered can be confusing to everyone (including database administrators). In this session we’ll break down permissions from the instance level down, to understand the difference between server and database principals, how server and database roles work, and how to use custom roles and object-level permissions to grant just the right amount of access to our applications and end users. Filled with practical demonstrations this session is geared for developers, junior and accidental DBAs, and system administrators looking to understand how best to implement SQL Server security.
Josh smith is a production database administrator (going on seven years) as well as a community organizer. They are currently the president of the Inland Northwest Data Professionals Association and helped to organize SQL Saturday Spokane. Josh is perhaps too excited by documentation and cataloging but makes up for it with equal amounts of enthusiasm for automation and database deployment pipelines. When not working or sheltering in place during a global pandemic they are also an Aikido instructor in the Aikido World Alliance.
